Best ways to make sure your car is ready for winter
Winter is well and truly here in Victoria, which means shorter days, colder mornings and wetter roads. You might find yourself driving in the dark more often, or in rain and hail that decreases your visibility and your safety.
At Mantello Hyundai Roxburgh Park, our friendly staff have been selling and servicing new and used cars here for over eight years. We love offering our expert advice to car owners so that they can make the best of every driving situation they’re faced with.
Here are our tips on the best ways to make sure your car is ready for winter.
Keep your windows clean
When you have dirty windows, it can be a noticeable barrier to visibility even in good weather. Clean the outside and the inside of your vehicle’s windows regularly and make sure that your wipers are operating properly. That could mean replacing your wiper blades if they’re looking worn down or not clearing the windscreen efficiently.
Don’t forget your lights
During winter, we tend to need our lights more than ever. Switch on your lights and take a good look around the vehicle to make sure they’re all working – including low beam, high beam and taillights. Enlist the help of a friend to have a look at your brake lights, if you need to.
Lots of people forget to double-check their emergency lights, too, which are important if you get stuck on the side of the road. Being thorough now could save a lot of hassle down the road.
Check your battery
Getting the health of your battery checked is never more important than in winter. Batteries face extra challenges during colder months, especially when it comes to starting a cold engine early in the morning.

Your tyres matter
When road surfaces are wet or icy, your tyres can be your best friends. When you have sufficient tread depth, water will be driven away from your tyres to provide a much safer drive.
When’s the last time you checked the tread on your car’s tyres? Along with correct inflation pressure, keeping a close on tyre tread can prevent skidding and keep you safe on every journey.
Watch where you park
If you can, parking either undercover or in a lockable garage can protect your car from all of the usual winter elements like wind, rain and hail. Parking outside on a grassy area in winter will increase your chances of rust and erosion. Parking somewhere undercover can also decrease your car insurance in many cases.
Top up the fluids
Whether you’re driving a car older than your Mum or whizzing around in a brand-new vehicle, keeping your fluids in check is always a good idea. As well as keeping an eye on oil levels and quality, check your water levels and the antifreeze in your vehicle’s cooling system. Antifreeze is there to make sure the fluids in your car’s system doesn’t freeze over.
